The KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension connects the Downtown Main Street starter-line to Kansas City’s Riverfront. The 0.7-mile extension begins at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market, crosses the existing Grand Boulevard Bridge, and ends near the midpoint of Berkley Riverfront — about a 5-minute walk to the KC Current stadium. When this streetcar extension is complete, the entire KC Streetcar system, which includes the Main Street Extension, will stretch nearly 6.5 miles, connecting the University of Kansas City – Missouri (UMKC) to Berkley Riverfront Park.

KC Streetcar Track Improvements for a Smoother Ride

Upcoming Construction on the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension
Beginning Monday, January 20, the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension team will begin work that includes significant impacts to downtown streetcar service and River Market road and bridge closures.
The following schedule is subject to change, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting. This work includes installing rail switches, building needed for the extension, connecting the new system to the existing streetcar, and building the new platform at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard.
Meet the Team: RS Electric/WITEC Joint Venture
A joint venture of RS Electric and WITEC Electrical Contractors directs the electrical work for KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension.
This partnership combines RS Electric’s in-depth knowledge of the KC Streetcar system with WITEC’s expertise in signals and street lighting. Approximately 25 field and office members are dedicated to the Riverfront Extension project.

Grand Boulevard Bridge to Close on Monday, September 9 for KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension Construction
On Monday, September 9, the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension project team, led by Radmacher Brothers Excavating (RBE), will temporarily close the Grand Boulevard Bridge from 2nd Street to Front Street.

Radmacher Brothers Excavating (RBE) leads the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension construction team, which includes an RS Electric/WITEC joint venture, Delta Rail, Wilson & Company, PM Dynamics, Boundary & Construction Surveying, IBC, Grey Diamond, Realm Construction, Hayes Drilling, Welch Erosion Control, and Parson + Associates.
Construction is Rolling on the Riverfront!
Construction on the KC Streetcar’s Riverfront Extension is underway, with early work including drilling for overhead catenary system foundations and setting poles. The overhead catenary system (OCS) is a collection of poles and suspended wires which power a streetcar. To ensure these 30′-45′ tall poles are secure, foundations must be drilled and filled with concrete before installation.
Celebrate the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension’s Groundbreaking on Friday, March 1
Join the Kansas City Streetcar Authority (KCSA), Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA), City of Kansas City (KCMO), and Port KC as they mark the start of construction for the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension.
The 0.7 mile extension begins at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market and ends near the midpoint of Berkley Riverfront. The route will connect residents, businesses, and visitors to new and existing amenities at the Riverfront including the new KC Current stadium.
