KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension assets and information

About the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension

The KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension connects the Downtown Main Street starter-line to Kansas City’s Riverfront. The 0.7-mile extension begins at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market, crosses the existing Grand Boulevard Bridge, and ends near the midpoint of Berkley Riverfront — about a 5-minute walk to the KC Current stadium. When this streetcar extension is complete, the entire KC Streetcar system, which includes the Main Street Extension, will stretch nearly 6.5 miles, connecting the University of Kansas City – Missouri (UMKC) to Berkley Riverfront Park.

Tuesday, December 16: Dead-wire testing

Clarence the clearance cart, who was built to mimic the size of a standard KC Streetcar vehicle, was out on the the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension this week testing whether a streetcar will have space to travel safely past buildings, poles, and other structures. The Riverfront Extension construction team designed and constructed this cart specifically for this extension.

Wednesday, December 17: Live-wire testing

The KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension reached a major milestone this week as a streetcar officially rolled onto the newly constructed tracks that lead from the River Market to the Riverfront, stopping at the newly build Riverfront Streetcar Stop. The first “live wire” test took place on Wednesday, December 17, marking the first time the system was energized and the first time a streetcar has ever traveled to the Riverfront in Kansas City’s history.

Information about Station Shelters Arrival

Three new streetcar stop shelters were installed this week for the KC Streetcar’s Riverfront Extension, marking another major milestone toward the project’s completion. One streetcar shelter is located on Grand Boulevard just north of 3rd Street and will be the new Northbound River Market stop. Two shelters are located at the line’s terminus on Berkley Riverfront, near Riverfront Drive and Berkley Plaza.

The shelters feature the familiar blue steel frames, acrylic canopy panels, upgraded lighting, and hardware consistent with those used on the Main Street Extension. Each standard shelter stands 8 feet tall and spans 15 feet wide, with the frame and roof weighing approximately 3,500 pounds. Constructed from steel and aluminum, the shelters include edge-lit glass panels, an acrylic roof, and a wood bench for seating. Station markers were also installed at both stations. Real-time arrival signs will be added to the station markers at a later stage to provide riders with estimated arrival times for the next streetcar. The shelters were fabricated by Decamil and will be installed by Kansas City-based Infinity Sign Systems.

The Riverfront Extension broke ground in March 2024. Construction is expected to be completed and the extension open for passenger service by early 2026, in time for FIFA World Cup attendees and fans.
