On Monday, September 9, the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension project team, led by Radmacher Brothers Excavating (RBE), will temporarily close the Grand Boulevard Bridge from 2nd Street to Front Street.

The closure is necessary for construction crews to mill the bridge deck, install expansion joints, prepare the bridge for track, and other miscellaneous activities. This first phase of the closure will last for approximately 45 days, until October 23, 2024.

Following the Riverfront Extension track preparation work, Brandenburg Demolition will close the bridge for an additional two weeks to remove Evergy’s coal chute that is in conflict with the extension, which is located just north of 2nd Street. This work is anticipated to start Thursday, October 24, and last for approximately two weeks, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

The entire closure is anticipated to last approximately 60 days, beginning Monday, September 9, and reopening at the end of the day on Thursday, November 7, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Beginning Saturday, September 14, crews will work on Saturdays through the duration of the closure. Work hours are anticipated to be 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Information about Saturday work will be in the Weekly Newsletter sent every Friday.

Detour Routes

Detour signage will be posted during the full duration of the bridge closure. Please follow marked detours.

Pedestrian/Bicycle Detour

  • During this work, pedestrians and bicyclists will use the Town of Kansas Bridge to travel between the River Market and Berkley Riverfront.

Project Overview

The KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension connects the Downtown Main Street starter-line to Kansas City’s Riverfront. The 0.7-mile extension begins at 3rd Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market, crosses the existing Grand Boulevard Bridge, and ends near the midpoint of Berkley Riverfront — about a 5-minute walk to the KC Current stadium.
